Barrier Island, 2013
Sand is used to construct a pair of monolithic sculptures. The sand is imprinted with plastic castings of soles from running shoes, natural supplements (Spirulina, Turmeric, etc.) and pages from a catalogue of Robert Mapplethorpe’s Flower series. The title is a reference to Fire Island, a gay vacation destination which is a barrier island off the coast of Long Island, NY. The work explores the issue of the nature vs. nurture debate in queer embodiment.
