A lecture on Nancy Holt presented at the Dia Art Foundation for their Artists on Artists Lecture Series, in New York, on November 27, 2018. I wrote a text that addresses the intersection of my experiences working in the deserts of Utah (on Negative Space) with my experience of visiting Nancy Holts Sun Tunnels for the first time. The text also explores Holt’s larger oeuvre in relation to the infamous Sun Tunnels as well as her influence over her late husband Robert Smithson’s work, noting the way he has been historically championed while she remain a marginal figure. The text was read as part of a performative lecture that was later published as a book titled ZERO: A.K. Burns on Nancy Holt.
